In a startling stretch from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 123 people died by gunshot wounds in Chicago. 65 soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq during the same period; roughly the same died in Afghanistan. While not belittling the sacrifice these soldiers made, they died in hot combat zones fighting disguised and suicidal terrorists. How is it that that more individuals die in our own borders, where we perceive everything to be safe? Looking beyond the shocking human loss, it's not hard to imagine a dramatic economic impact being felt in this area in the near future. I will certainly think twice before visiting the Windy City without my M16 and thirty rounds. Chicago's CBS 2 started tracking the shootings on Google Maps, displayed in the image above. You can find the map here. Start the clock; we'll see how long it takes to hear cries for more firearms restrictions. Never mind that most of the weapons were likely illegal to begin with.
