So we're several weeks into the new season of Smallville. I think they're up to episode five tonight; I've only gotten up to Episode 4, Instinct. I've not been a follower of the many Superman story lines in comics and otherwise, so my information about all of the new characters is sparse. So far, I have a few thoughts in time-tested bullet form.
- Years ago, about the time Clark was graduating from high school, I told my friends I thought Smallville should conclude, and when he moved to the big city to go to college, we should see a show that moved with him. Transition the warm, glowing imagery of Smallville for the dark, harder imagery of the city and call the show Metropolis. Well, branding is tough to throw away in media today, so the name has stayed the same. However, the show's focus has definitely shifted. The shift was inevitable when John Schneider and Annette O'Toole left. And now that Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk and others have sailed away, it's a new show. Here's to hoping they don't just throw everything away at the end. We're dying for a spinoff Justice League series. Heck, call that Metropolis. I won't sue.
- I miss Jonathan Kent. Any time we're at the farm, I expect him to walk in to talk to Clark. Those early seasons were something special. We'll always have the DVDs. Lionel can't take that away. Speaking of....
- I miss Lionel. He quickly became the key to dramatic tension. I was never sure whether he was good or bad. But I always believed one way or the other, never seeing him in shades of gray. He was as indispensable, or maybe more so than Lex.
- I don't miss Lex as much. He was perfect. Rosenbaum was perfect. But, I think the show shifted quite successfully, and knowing that he's still out there somewhere is maybe even more terrifying. And Luthorcorp is still kicking, so evil hasn't died.
- I don't miss Lana at all. The past few seasons I just wanted her forever wed to Clark's side, or forever dead. Her presence drove the first era of the show, but of late it had become a distraction, much as Lana was a distraction to Clark's mission. I still always wanted Clark to hook up with Chloe anyways. But I'm warming to Lois, as Clark seems to be as well.
- The opening credits and theme warm my heart. Every time.
- Let's see Clark fly again. Seriously. Not often; make us wait for it. But I'm dying for it. You are too.
Thursday nights at 8 pm eastern, or you can grab it at the iTunes store.
