So, Christmas season is officially here. I was at the Giant Center in Hershey last Sunday evening for my annual Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. I have been to a concert every year since 2003, and they are always just a little better than the last time. They claim that their music is written so that the lyrics/poems and the music can be viewed separately, and still hold up. When added together they create something far greater than the parts. I believe they approach their show from the same angle. You could close your eyes and just listen, leaving fully satisfied. Or, you could plug your ears and just watch. But, if you watch and listen you are witnessing an entirely new level of excitement.

Their lighting is matched so perfectly to the music, their music flowing so perfectly with the story that it is truly a must-see performance. The ever-changing stagecraft above and behind, the overwhelming synchronization of the lighting, lasers and pyrotechnics all make for an incredibly enjoyable evening. For the past several years they've used a lift at the opposite end of the stadium to get closer to the back-seat ticket-holders. This year they moved to a cable-lifted platform that was truly impressive. You really got the impression that the performers were just floating in front of us. I'm already looking forward to 2009!
